The Merchant Marine Mariner's Medal was established May 10, 1943. It was designed because the Merchant Marines were not considered a branch of the US Armed Forces, and therefore were not eligible for the Purple Heart. The Mariner's Medal honors Seamen who are killed or wounded as a direct result of conflict against an opposing armed force. Over 6,000 Marinier's medals were awarded for service during World War II. Further awards were suspended June 30, 1956.
