The Korean Service Bar was established July 24, 1956 by Public Law 759 for service on US Merchant Marine ships operating in Korean waters between June 30, 1950 and September 30, 1953. The Merchant Marine Decorations and Medals act of May 30, 1988 authorized the creation of the corresponding medal.
