This medal was designed in to commemorate the liberation of Okinawa from the Japanese. The Battle for Okinawa was code named Operation Iceberg. It was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and lasted 82 days. The reverse side bears the official seal of the 50th Anniversary Committee.
